Sound Transit

Overview

Sound Transit, officially known as the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, is a public transit agency serving the Seattle metropolitan area, including Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties in Washington state. Established in 1993, it has become a key provider of regional transit, carrying 42 million passengers in 2024 with an average of over 134,000 weekday riders. The agency focuses on affordable and environmentally friendly public transportation, connecting communities and promoting sustainability. Sound Transit operates three main transit services: the Link light rail system, the Sounder commuter rail, and Sound Transit Express buses. The Link light rail serves as the rapid transit backbone, while the Sounder commuter rail connects Everett to Lakewood via Seattle. The Express buses provide high-capacity routes across the three counties. The agency is also expanding its network to a comprehensive 252 miles, enhancing transit infrastructure and integrating tools like the ORCA fare card system for seamless travel.
