Stony Brook Medicine is Long Island's leading academic medical center and teaching hospital, part of Stony Brook University's Health Sciences Center. Established in response to the 1963 Muir Report, it opened its doors in 1980 as the region's first academic medical center. The facility features a 504-bed hospital and offers a range of comprehensive clinical services, including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, open heart surgery, and a Burn Center. The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University trains future physicians through its medical degree program, which has grown significantly since its inception in 1971. Stony Brook Medicine is also known for its contributions to medical research, including the discovery of the cause of Lyme disease and the development of innovative medications. In 2016, it formed a strategic partnership with Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine to enhance education, research, and clinical care programs.
